Windows Installer Service could not be accessed?
May 21st, 2007 Posted in Windows XPWindows Installer is an engine for the installation, maintenance, and removal of software on modern Microsoft Windows systems. (Wikipedia)
The installation information and all related files are packaged in installation packages, loosely relational databases structured and commonly known as “MSI files”. Sometimes, when you try to run the installer in Windows XP, the following message shows and stops you from going further.

I encountered with this problem and tried to search the solutions from Google. However, most of the solutions could not fix the problem well. At last, I found a method from somewhere else to fix the problem.
You can try this way to resolve this behavior:
- Go to Start Menu > Run.
- Type in “services.msc”.
- Find the service, “Windows Installer“, right click to Properties.
- Access to “Log On” Tab.
- Select “Local System Account” and check the box, “Allow service to interact with Desktop“. (Picture 2)
- Click OK and try to start the installer again. :)

If this does not work for you, please visit the follownig sites for other solutions.
P/S: I will try this on Windows Vista, and update the result here. :)

I just recently encountered that same problem. I have Windows XP Professional and the problem came up after Windows update was installing KB931906 CAPICOM again and again each time I restarted the computer. I never needed to check “Allow service to interact with desktop” before, but after checking that box the Windows installer service works again!!! I wonder what really caused Windows installer to fail. Thanks for sharing this solution.By Carlosca on Apr 18, 2008

Great advice ! I did mine by going into the general tab, and setting my startup type to Autmatic… Loved your advice… Now I can get Symatec out of my life for good :)By Femtos on May 5, 2008
